ABSTRACT: Gimp 2.8 creates an alpha channel as a single layer during the automatic process of editing the images to remove the background. Because not all viewers and image manipulation programs support the alpha channel, it is necessary to combine the layers. Flattening the image layers for single and batch files is described in the booklet.

ABSTRACT: Besides the identification, a photographic record is necessary for the reliable documentation of coins. This includes the photography of the coins and the editing of the images to remove the background. This short text describes how this work can be carried out with DigiCam Control, IrfanView, Gimp, ImageMagick and Bimp. In order to edit a large number of images in a short time, various batch methods are described.

ABSTRACT: The Geodatabase of Early Imperial Countermarked Coins in the Rhine Area is based on the database, which – together with the publication, „Gegenstempel auf frühkaiserzeitlichen Aesprägungen im Rheingebiet - Grundlagen, Systematik, Typologie -" was published in the year 2009. In the new, reworked edition, more detailed information is presented about the host coins and about the chronological order of the countermarks. The findspots of the countermarked coins are indicated through longitude and latitude.
The detailed breakdown of the countermarks and their host coins allows the data to be further modified with one of the numerous GIS programmes that are available. With the help of detailed find maps, this can be used to acquire new insight into the circulation of early imperial countermarks in the Rhine area.

ABSTRACT: The circa 550 numismatic symbols used in the volumes of the Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) are here available for use for the first time as independent fonts for Mac, Windows and Unix.
Following installation, the symbols may be enlarged or reduced, written bold, italic or underlined and freely combined with other font types. The various die positions and legend forms can be illustrated by means of numerous arrows- straight, semicircular or in 3/4 circular form.
In the list below the individual letters and their forms in ligature are alphabetically arranged and the pictorial symbols are listed according to their form. The monograms of the late antique rulers are given separately, following the order used in the RIC.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to provide a user-friendly catalogue of the countermarked coins of the early Empire circulating in the Rhine area. The creation of a citable handbook through the systematic compilation and analysis of the countermarks will in turn lead to a more accurate understanding of the processes by which coins circulated in the Rhine area than was previously possible.

ABSTRACT: The collection of countermarked coins assembled by Konrad Bech of Mainz is based around the punched marks which were employed under the early Roman Empire in the area of the later provinces Germania inferior and superior. Each of the countermarks represented in the Bech collection is individually discussed and put into context. With the help of countermarked coins from documented finds, the circulation areas of the countermarked coins of the early imperial period are revealed.

ABSTRACT: In the last quarter of the 1st Century B.C. Augustus undertook a reorganisation of the Roman monetary system, introducing new denominations. The smallest unit of value was the Quadrans, which was only struck in the years 9/8 B.C. and 5/4 B.C. in Rome and which is hardly present in the coin finds of Niedersachsen/Lower Saxony. Since the Quadrans played an essential role in the functioning of the monetary economy, in Gaul and Germany it was replaced with local coins, which were of a similar size and weight.

ABSTRACT: Late Augustan coin circulation in the military camps along the river Rhine is characterised by the same coin types as those present in the early Tiberian period. The two phases can be distinguished from one another through the use of the countermarks VAR and CAESAR as well as IMPAVC, TIBAVC and TIBIM, of which the latter three occur together. In Germanicus‘ time the composition of the emissions changed, as did the manner in which coinage was distributed. Large quantities of moneyers‘ Asses were sent from Italy to the Rhine area en bloc and entered into circulation from there. Through this process, supplies of coinage to the armies in Lower and Upper Germania followed two separate routes.

ABSTRACT: During the reign of Augustus Quadrantes were minted in Rome only in the years 9/8 B.C and 5/4 B.C. Although it played an essential role in the Roman economy, this small denomination is only very rarely encountered in coin finds in Gaul and Germany. Instead of coins minted by the Roman state, locally produced coins were used, which were of a similar size and weight.

ABSTRACT: Taking the find of eight aurei in Kalkriese in June 2016 as a starting point, the gold and silver coins which Augustus minted for himself and his two adopted sons, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, can be divided into one major and two minor groups, the latter being of a later date. Following certain criteria- the position of the obverse legend in relation to the coin image, the size of the portrait of Augustus in relation to the coin size and the arrangement of the Caesares on the reverse, as well as use of different metals (gold and silver)- the coin dies used can be sorted into twelve groups. Stylistic evidence shows that the issues were minted in Lyon.

ABSTRACT: The diffusion of the ruler's portrait as a vehicle for the legitimization of his claim to power began at the end of the Roman Republic with the coinage of Caesar in 44 B.C. His successors adopted this form of self-display and introduced dynastic elements into their coinage by depicting members of their own families on their coins. To outward appearances Augustus also adopted this style of representation, but closer inspection reveals that he also changed its form.

ABSTRACT: With the new find of eight gold aurei in Kalkriese, the total number of gold coins found on the site has increased substantially. The new discovery demonstrates that gold played a significant role within the coin circulation of the early imperial era.
The gold and silver coins minted by Augustus for his adoptive sons Caius and Lucius Caesar can be subdivided into several die groups according to the obverse legends, the size of the portrait and the reverse images. The coins themselves display additional indications as to how the images were engraved in the coin dies.

ABSTRACT: Germanicus is not celebrated on Roman imperial coinage during his lifetime. His portrait first appears on coins under Caligula and Caligula's successor Claudius. While his portrait appears in both precious metal and aes coinages during the reign of Caligula, under Claudius it is only found on sestertii and asses. This is due to the differing minting programmes of the two emperors.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes a hoard of aes coinage from Regensdorf, which is possibly preserved in its entirety. The 106 coins preserved in the hoard date from between 330 and 348 A.D. and thus span a period of time which was not previously represented by existing finds from Furttal. Despite this, the coin types present in the Regensdorf hoard closely resemble those found in finds from the central Rhine area.

ABSTRACT: In 1993 a hoard was discovered during forestry work in Vättis (Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland). This was buried during the reign of Aurelian. Subsequent investigations and new analyses of the material have led to a greater understanding of the composition of the hoard and have enabled its burial to be dated to the years 272/73.

ABSTRACT: The article discusses a group of countermarked coins of the Augustan period, which were claimed to have been found in Xanten but which in fact acquired their countermarks in Thrace and Moesia. It is very likely that these coins were deliberately scattered in areas with early imperial army camps, so that they would be found and brought into association with the Varus disaster and Kalkriese.

ABSTRACT: In the Hadrianic period a round temple made of wood was erected on the Grosser Hafner, an island in the Zürichsee. Excavations revealed a total of nearly 90 coins. The majority of the coins were considerably earlier in date than the temple itself and this makes it very likely that the island was already occupied in earlier times.

ABSTRACT: The city of Ankyra in Phrygia chose a scene of coin minting as the reverse motif for one of its coin issues. The coin, struck during the reign of Philip the Arab, is of particular significance as it is the only Roman Imperial coin known at present to depict a minting scene. In contrast to the other minting scenes presented here for comparative purposes -those on a tessera in Vienna and a contorniate in the Vatican- the die-cutter in the present example used mythological imagery to create the scene.

ABSTRACT: A necessary part of the documentation of coins is, besides identification and inclusion in a databank, the creation of a photographic record. In order to photograph large numbers of coins from finds and collections, a plug‐in and batchfile have been created, which allow the backgrounds to be removed from coin images, the images to be fixed in a ratio of 1:1 and these to be given a title.

ABSTRACT: The minting of coins on behalf of family members first occurs in the Roman Empire under Augustus. These coins had the primary function of promoting a successor. Under Tiberius the emphasis placed on his adoptive father, the deified Augustus, is of particular significance. Only under Caligula does the iconography of the family refer back to the ancestors; here Germanicus is particularly highlighted. With Claudius the circle of favoured members of the domus augusta changes somewhat. As under Augustus the immediate successor is the focus of attention.

ABSTRACT: The political influence and exercise of power by female members of the Roman imperial family has in recent years formed the focus of countless studies in the field of ancient history. This lecture examines the "Fürprägungen" minted for female family members in the period between Claudius and Commodus as until now no attempt has been made to compare the percentage of coins minted for female members of the imperial family with those produced for the male members nor to discuss these two in relation to each other.
